Squeak was at home with his person, Terry Ford, a farmer in Zimbabwe, at a time in 2002 when there were uprisings against white people who owned property from back in the colonial era. One evening, armed militants burst into the farmhouse.

The dog would not leave the farmer’s body,” said Meryl Harrison, of Zimbabwe’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

When the body was covered, Squeak, a Jack Russell terrier, just lay back down on the same blanket.

Family members took Squeak to the funeral service in Harare, where where he went up to the coffin, seemed confused and troubled, and then jumped into the arms of Ford’s fiancĂ©, Naomi Raaff. Later he went to live with a close friend of the family.
