Humpback Whale Rescued from Ghost Net
This terrified whale was caught up and stranded in a mass of ghost netting.
Ghost nets are enormous, indestructible plastic nets abandoned by fishing boats. Once cast adrift in the ocean, these nets create havoc for wildlife, catching fish and other animals – from shrimp to turtles to whales – who then have no way out.
In this one case, fortunately, the whale was spotted and a team of divers were able to free her – at some risk to themselves since one flip of her tail would have been very dangerous.
