Poldi the cat went for a walk from his family home in 1996. He reappeared … this week!

For months after he disappeared, Poldi’s family searched their Munich, Germany, neighborhood for him. They finally gave up, thinking they would never see him again.

Last week, in a forest 20  miles away, two hikers found an orange tabby cat sitting on a log, and one of them, 19-year-old Kilian Schoettel, took him home.

“My son immediately noticed that the animal was quite old. He felt sorry for him because he no longer had any front teeth,” Kilian’s father Bernhard Schoettel told the local newspaper. “The tom was very trusting. We fed him for a few days and discovered that he was tattooed, so we took him to the animal sanctuary over the weekend.”

They took the cat  to the Munich Tierschutzverein Animal Rescue Center, where shelter manager Eveline Kosenbach found a tattoo in his ear. The cat was Poldi.

“He was not feeling well,” said Kosenbach. “He obviously wanted to be found. He is now enjoying being looked after and is happily back with his guardian at long last.”

Poldi and his person, Monika Moser, are now home together. And they couldn’t be happier.
