City officials brought in possums to combat rats. What they got: plenty of both.

Trying to outwit Mother Nature several years ago, city officials introduced opossums into residential areas of Brooklyn. The idea was to have the cute-looking critters catch rats.

But the rats are still there, and the opossums are multiplying, with bands of them cruising backyards.
