A new relationship with animals, nature and each other.

Rick Santorum Shoots Birds to Snare Votes

Five years ago, when Rick Santorum told me on the phone how much he cared about animals, I asked him: “You’re well known for your concerns over the sanctity of life. Is animal welfare a sanctity-of-life issue for you?”

He replied: “Animals are the most vulnerable. They can’t speak for themselves. … For me, there’s a responsibility of humankind to take care of God’s creation and to do so in a responsible way…. And when I see folks who don’t, it leads to other problems in society. If we’re not treating animals decently and respectfully then it can lead to a general crudeness in our society.”

Today, as he struggled to prove his credentials in Iowa, Rick Santorum got out his guns and went hunting. “I had four clean kills and then I had some group kills,” he told reporters.

Santorum had joined Iowa Congressman Steve King for a day of killing birds near Des Moines. King’s endorsement is considered important, and Gov. Rick Perry, who’s also struggling to get ahead in the upcoming Iowa caucuses, has already been out killing twice with King.

Bottom line: It’s really about the sanctity of Santorum, isn’t it?
