Obama Dogs Romney with Bo – Will It Backfire?

Obama campaign manager David Axelrod is tweaking Mitt Romney with this photo of First Dog Bo and the caption:

How loving owners transport their dogs.

This relates to the old story of Mitt putting the family dog, Seamus, in a crate on the roof of the car for a 12-hour drive to Canada.

Axelrod has also launched a Facebook page, Pet Lovers for Obama, which gathered about 8,000 followers in its first day. The page says it’s “dedicated to showcasing the Obama 2012 spirit of our favorite animals and those of us who love them.”

Bo is a delightful pooch, but I’m wondering how long it will be before someone makes the point that after thousands of people asked and then petitioned Obama to adopt a shelter dog, he ignored the request and, instead, went to the breeder from whom Ted Kennedy had bought one of his dogs.

To have gone to a shelter in D.C. with the family, and with the press corps in tow, would have made an enormous impression on the American people in terms of promoting shelter adoptions. And the caption on the photo might now have read:

How loving guardians adopt their dogs.
