Ideas that may sprout

Dozens of winners were announced Wednesday in a United Nations-backed program that fetes eco-friendly initiatives.

The SEED – Supporting Entrepreneurs for Environment and Development – award-winners included a portable solar cooker called SolSource that is being used in rural China to turn waste heat into electricity for cooking, heating and electricity.

SolSource, designed by One Earth Designs and in concert with rural communities in the Himalayas, can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and indoor pollution, which is one of the leading causes of mortality for children under 5 in developing countries.

“The SEED Award winners exemplify the strong spirit of entrepreneurship in the developing world and its significance in creating a Green Economy,” said UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.
